Editor, Commonwealth:
Our community is currently facing a pressing shortage of rental housing options for professionals and families moving into Greenwood. Every week, we hear from individuals eager to make Greenwood their home but struggling to find suitable rental accommodations. This issue is impacting all of us, especially when new hires for local employers are unable to secure housing.
To address this need, we have secured a $15,000 Smart Growth grant from the National Association of Realtors through the Mississippi Realtors to fund a study of Greenwood’s rental market. This study, conducted by the Buckhorn Group, will provide detailed insights into the specific rental needs within our community.
As part of this study, we are conducting a survey, in cooperation with the Greenwood-Leflore-Carroll Economic Development Foundation, Greenwood-Leflore County Chamber of Commerce and the Greenwood Rotary Club, to gather input from community employers and their employees regarding housing needs for Greenwood’s workforce.
The survey results will be instrumental in quantifying these needs to attract developers interested in creating quality rental properties that meet the demands of Greenwood’s workforce, particularly in the downtown area. Your feedback will help us better understand the housing challenges impacting Greenwood’s businesses and support our efforts to advocate for housing solutions that benefit our community’s growth and economy.
The EDF, the chamber and Rotary have sent emails to its members inviting them to complete and share the survey. Please take a few moments to complete this important survey (https://greenwoodmsrealtors.com/hns) and encourage your employees and network to do the same. Your input is invaluable, and together we can work toward a more vibrant, welcoming Greenwood for current and future residents.
The deadline to complete the survey is Dec. 1. If you have any questions, please contact me, 601-831-4505.
