1st Presbyterian will join new denomination

First Presbyterian Church of Greenwood has voted overwhelmingly to leave its current denomination.

By a 249-3 vote Sunday, the church decided to leave Presbyterian Church USA to join a new denomination, Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians, also known as ECO.

Locust Grove to mark its 150th anniversary Sunday

Locust Grove Missionary Baptist Church will celebrate its 150th anniversary at its morning service Sunday.

The Rev. Melvin B. Lewis, a former pastor of Locust Grove who is now pastor of Rising Star M.B. Church in Tupelo, will speak at the service, which will start at 8 a.m.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
