Third graders in the Greenwood Leflore Consolidated School District will have a new after-school program after Thanksgiving to help address literacy needs.
At a special called school board meeting Monday morning, Superintendent James Johnson-Waldington recommended the plan for Bankston, Davis, East, Leflore County and Threadgill elementary schools.
The after-school program will be held three days per week and address phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.
Johnson-Waldington said professional development for teachers is scheduled to begin this week, and the expected start date for the after-school program is Nov. 29.
The program fees are budgeted to come out of the
$30 million five-year grant that was awarded this year to the Delta Health Alliance to establish a Promise Community in Leflore County.
Also, the board:
- Approved revision to the Leflore Promise Community Grant budget to contract a financial coordinator and raise the pay of secretaries and those in the business office to help cover labor costs associated with data and reporting for DHA in the district.
“This was a position brought to me by those dealing with the DHA grant, and there’s a lot more to the paperwork and finances than we knew. Ms. (Nekeshia) Collins had been needing assistance to make sure the district was in compliance with the grant,” Johnson-Waldington said, referring to DHA’s liaison with the district.
- Approved the district’s request for proposals for a K-12 online reading assessment program to help teachers address reading skills. Bids may be submitted to the superintendent’s office until 2 p.m. Nov. 29.
- Approved the district’s request for proposals for a K-12 special education and supports program.
- Entered into a 50-minute executive session to discuss personnel as it relates to job performance of employees but took no action.
