Popeyes is coming back to Greenwood.
A new location of the chain fried chicken restaurant will open later this year on U.S. 82 near West Park Avenue.
The owner of the franchise, Skip Russell, said he expects the restaurant to be successful.
“This is a good town, and it will be good for the people,” he said.
Russell, who lives in Magee, said he was looking at property throughout Greenwood for the last five years and was finally able to find the perfect spot.
In total, he owns and operates 10 Popeyes locations throughout the state. This is his first one in the Delta. “I feel very fortunate to have found this property,” he said.
Russell said he plans to open the restaurant in late June or early July and hopes to hire around 100 people to work there.
He also said this will be the first site in Mississippi to have the revamped Popeyes building design. Titled “The Nola,” this new look is meant to symbolize the chain’s Louisiana roots with a “light grey, almost white, paint with teal green shutters and exterior lights,” he said.
More than a decade ago, a Popeyes restaurant was located on West Park Avenue in the building that currently houses Back Yard Burger.
Russell said that over the last few years, Popeyes has become more popular and has improved its service.
“Popeyes has come a long way and has really become a household name,” he said, adding that the food also “has gotten so much better in the last 10 to 15 years.”
