Pillow Academy notched its third straight win with a 13-9 victory over visiting Oak Hill Academy Saturday at Coleman Field in Utroska Park.
Pillow (5-3) trailed 5-0 after 2 1/2 innings but tallied three runs in the bottom of the third and six in the home half of the fourth for 9-5 advantage. Oak Hill plated four runs in the top of the fifth, but the Mustangs pushed across one run in the fifth and three in the sixth. Both teams collected nine hits each, and Oak Hill made seven errors to Pillow’s four.
Aiden Valente (2-0), the fourth Pillow hurler, got the win as he went 2 2/3 innings, striking out three. J.C. Garrard started the game, going 2 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on five hits, walking three and striking out two.
John Heston Powers went the next two-plus innings, giving up three runs on three hits, walking one and fanning one. Benz Porter came into the game in the fifth, allowing two runs on one hit, walking one.
Brock Makamson went 2-for-4 with a single and triple, driving in four runs and scoring twice. Chamberlain McClain had an RBI double and scored a run, and Garrard and Valente had two hits each and scored two runs apiece. One of Garrard’s hits was a double. Dayne Sanford had a single.
On Friday night, Makamson smashed a three-run homer as the Mustangs rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Southaven High School 6-2.
Makamson’s home run came in the bottom of the sixth as Pillow scored six runs, and then held the Chargers scoreless in the top of the seventh. Southaven scored its two runs in the second frame.
Makamson had three RBIs and scored one run. Valente had a single, RBI and scored once, and Garrard had a double and scored a run. Sanford and McClain had a single and scored a run each.
Elliot Flowers had a single and RBI, and Perry Smith had a single.
Sanford started on the mound, going five innings, allowing two runs on two hits, walking one and fanning five. Trace Schmitz (1-0) got the win as he worked the sixth, walking one. Valente pitched the seventh inning.
Pillow, which hosted Winston Monday, will also host Canton Academy Tuesday.
-Carroll Academy: The duo of Ethan Mims and Brennan Blaylock did not yield a hit to Benton Academy in a 17-0 victory Friday night in Benton.
Mims (1-1) got the win as he went the first three innings, walking three and fanning five. Blaylock worked the fourth frame, striking out three.
The Rebels (3-5 overall) scored two runs in the first inning, six each in the second and third frames and three in the fourth.
Blaylock also had a good day at the plate as he went 3-for-3 with three singles. He also scored four times. Reed Thomas also had three singles and scored two runs.
Ryan Logan had a single and double, drove in four runs and scored once. Lofton Holly had a single and double, scored three runs and drove in one. Jake Truitt had two singles and scored two runs, and Maddox Carpenter had a double, three RBIs and scored once.
Reid Blaylock had a single and two RBIs, and Brandon McKenzie had a single, RBI and scored twice.
Carroll, which played at Deer Creek Monday, entertains Delta Academy Tuesday.
-Amanda Elzy: The Panthers failed to get a hit as they dropped a 15-0 decision at Region 3-3A foe Winona High School Friday.
Jaquavius Hayes (0-1) started on the mound, failing to get an out. He walked three and gave up four runs. Kyheim Outlaw went the final 2 2/3 innings, allowing 11 runs on 10 hits, striking out one.
