City schools
Good luck to our kids in taking the state tests. Do the best that you can is all anyone can ask.
Whatever you accomplish, it will not be because of what the superintendent and Greenwood School Board have done to assist you. It will be because of dedicated administrators, teachers and staff who have put in the work with you.
The superintendent and school board have been busy in other ways not geared toward the students by spending money foolishly on an individual to lobby for them to hold onto their positions in case of merger with the Leflore County schools; by having too many parent extravaganzas; by targeting to get rid of Greenwood High Principal Percy Powell; and by technology.
Some of the money wasted with these endeavors could have been used to hire tutors for all schools to assist them in problem areas and hire consultants to come in and work with them in the same areas.

The Commonwealth quoted Greenwood School Superintendent Montrell Greene as saying, “Anything outside of focusing on testing right now is less than desirable in our district” (“Greene questions timing of audit,” May 1).
This leads me to believe auditing at this juncture is a distraction to students. No one seems to admit or believe that when Interim Superintendent Jennifer Wilson left the district just before testing last year, that was also a distraction. Sometimes you have to watch what you say just in case it comes back to bite you.
And as for Tim Kalich’s op-ed column Sunday (“Powell’s defense wasn’t persuasive”), you are not writing the hearing results. The moderator will. It was inappropriate of you to attempt to jump ahead, but that’s so Commonwealth.
Education diversity
I continue to be amazed by the hypocrisy and lack of common sense displayed by organizations such as those mentioned in the article “Most U.S. teachers don’t resemble their students” (May 5):
One would think that common sense would dictate people would want their children to be taught by the most qualified teacher, not one whose main qualification is that they “look like the students.”
This is nothing but blatant racism, and anyone who supports this “feel good” point of view is not interested in the quality of education.

Regarding the article “PA senior raises funds in memory of brother” (May 6):
What a wonderful story. They are all a great family.
