School hirings
Regarding the article “New principal is son of school board president” (April 27):
Here we go with who was hired in the Greenwood Leflore Consolidated School District and how much money they will make. I knew it was coming.
Do those people mentioned in the article have the credentials required for the jobs? If so, then they have every right to apply for and serve in those positions. I would raise eyebrows if “only” friends and relatives of board members and the superintendent were hired.
Anyway, look from the highest level of federal and local governments to business corporations, other public school districts and private schools, and I am sure the hiring practices in the majority of these places look the same. They probably look even more suspect at some levels, but it is totally accepted by many.

Regarding the article “Administrators named for new school district” (April 26):
How can you repair or upgrade anything with the same old parts? Greenwood will never progress to higher standards until it gets better qualified administrators in office. Just shaking my head.

Health care
Regarding Sid Salter’s op-ed column “How to pay for health care?” (April 25):
If you agree that good health care is everyone’s right, the answer is fairly simple: Raise the money through taxes on those who can best afford to pay.
The politicians who continue to cut taxes on wealthy individuals and corporations (some of which pay no taxes at all on billions in income) are not acting in the interest of the poor or middle class.
Most advanced nations of the world understand that government has a responsibility to provide health care to the public. In the United States, we haven’t yet recognized this as the solution. We need to do so.

Juneteenth
Regarding the letter to the editor by C. Sade Turnipseed (“Itta Bena board shows ignorance of history,” April 23):
The town of Itta Bena is financially strapped and cannot pay its bills. Maybe Mississippi Valley State University and Khafre can pay for the portable toilets.
These two glowing beacons of the community, MVSU and Khafre, could do two things: educate and financially support the continued Juneteenth celebration.
