Itta Bena
I do my daily walk through Itta Bena.
Down Schley Street, next to the Exxon station, there is a building that has been there as long as I can remember. It’s full of trees and weeds, a bad sight for sore eyes.
Also, the ditches look a mess. We don’t have Church’s, Wendy’s, McDonalds or KFC in Itta Bena, but yet we have their bags and boxes all over the place.
The ditch across the street from the school looks like a dump site.
Mayor Walter Parker, don’t say you don’t see this. The streets of Itta Bena look a mess. Do something.

Soldiers’ story
Regarding Wyatt Emmerich’s op-ed column “Soldiers tell intriguing story” (June 6):
What a wonderful story! I always enjoy reading about the good things our military has done, especially those from Mississippi.
Thanks, Wyatt!

It’s such a tragic waste that all of that bravery, intelligence, resourcefulness and honor has been expended on an effort that was never needed for any reason in the first place, blundered at the highest levels of command, and which has undeniably left the country weaker, poorer and in worse spirits.

Justice Department
Regarding Tim Kalich’s op-ed column “Justice Dept. won’t learn” (June 5):
It appears to me that the Department of Justice is violating federal law by acknowledging and “enforcing” policy/legislation based on racial distinctions.
Here, in the 21st century and the real world, most of us responsible parents (and our kids) have long since “overcome” any notice of classmates’ and playmates’ skin color. Demographics are irrelevant. The quality (or lack thereof) of public education is all that’s important. And no political rhetoric is going to change the fact that all Delta public high school graduates in the ’60s and ’70s were better educated and vastly more prepared for college and life than they are as a whole today.

DUI arrest
Regarding the article “Miss. Valley professor faces felony DUI charge” (June 1):
Well, then, put him away.
