Manti Te’o
While the media have focused on the “catfish” aspect of the Manti Te’o controversy, details of the religious dedication of both him and his family were revealed, and I began to wonder what part his spirituality played in the whole ordeal. What could have caused Te’o to have been so easily lured into what turned out to be a fictional romantic relationship?
I was reminded of some of the dating and married Christians I’ve known who enter relationships with great naiveté. It is my suspicion that the noble attempt to remain chaste was at the root of the scandal.
One might commit to celibacy for any number of reasons — clearer decision-making, emotional and medical protection, religious or moral convictions, etc. Few would argue against its benefits.
However, it is the honorable do-or-die pursuit of abstinence that I am afraid ensnares many a young, devout Christian into superficial dating relationships and, ultimately, premature marriages.
As a lifelong Protestant and one-time “Jesus Camp” attendee, I am intimately familiar with the emotions with which many of these shallow relationships are formed. In no way am I promoting premarital sex, but along with abstinence, one needs to have awareness. Don’t be so determined to obtain piety that you don’t take the time to truly get to know the person you’re dating.
Cheating scandal
Regarding the article “Probe: No evidence of cheating” (Jan. 27):
The superintendent decided to close both of her eyes to this serious issue when it was first brought to the light. Poor children!

Women in combat
Regarding the editorial “Make women sign up for draft, too” (Jan. 29):
Outstanding point. Allowing women in infantry units is just pure stupid. Shame on the generals who sat back and let this happen.

Cancer fund drive
Regarding the article “Elzy student starts anti-cancer fund drive” (Jan. 27):
This is a wonderful cause. Much success to the students at my alma mater!
