Early closings
What in the world is wrong with day cares in Greenwood? Why do they require parents to leave their jobs and come get the kids just because the schools close early?
School closings have nothing to do with a day-care business, unless the day care keeps kids after school. Parents are paying them to keep their children for five full days a week.
Then they close because the schools don't open. Most day cares keep children who are not of school age, so what does it matter that the schools are not open?
If they are collecting money for a service, they should be there to perform the service.
Their business does not revolve around schools and their holidays but around working parents’ jobs!

Regarding the letter to the editor by Itta Bena Mayor Thelma Collins (“Shanks too negative about Itta Bena,” Feb. 24):
“One Valley” is not Dr. William Bynum’s vision. It was created by Dr. Donna Oliver and is being used by Bynum.
What has this president done since his arrival? These are just a few things that Dr. Oliver accomplished in two years:
• Lobbied for and received $18.9 million from the state.
• Secured $140,000 for campus technology.
• Secured $2 million for completion of Rice-Totten Stadium.
• Completed $11.9 million renovation of J.H. White Library.
• Completed $3 million renovation of Academic Skills Building.
• Secured $11 million to begin Phase 1 of the $17 million expansion of the R.W. Harrison HPER Complex.
I could go on and on, but it would be like I am bragging. Coach Doug Shanks said in his op-ed column (“4 ways to help Valley,” Feb. 15) that she was incompetent.
I don’t think so.

Coach Shanks, thank you for your service to Mississippi Valley State University. Your work is appreciated. I agree with your recommendations, even if they may ruffle a few feathers. Good luck in your future endeavors.
