Emmerich column
Regarding Wyatt Emm-erich’s op-ed column “Religious ban is nonsensical” (Dec. 25):
I guess if you own a newspaper, you can write anything in it, sensible or not.
Morality can be taught without referring to a bible. You cannot make one argument for your position without referring to “the Bible,” which some people believe is an incomplete and inaccurate enhanced history arising from the Middle East 2,000 years and more ago.
The wisest people in our country have looked at this issue over and over and have decided that government is a neutral entity. It should not be involved in religion, and for good reason — namely, wars caused by religion and the discrimination that religion brings. Smarter heads than yours have prevailed on this, Mr. Emmerich. Your views are in the minority, maybe not in parts of Mississippi but in the more enlightened rest of the country.
So, should we have it your way, then you won’t be upset if we put the verses of Islam on the courthouse lawn. Or did you just want Christianity? What about Hinduism, Judaism or even atheism? Want to put that on the courthouse lawn?
If you want to teach your kids a questionable religion, do it in your private churches and keep it away from a government that must represent all the people.
