Coronavirus
Regarding Wyatt Emmerich’s “Keep coronavirus in some perspective” (April 8) and Kelley Williams’ “Health experts would go broke as bookies” (April 10):
Both of these writers say that reports of deaths from COVID-19 are possibly inaccurate because, as Emmerich wonders, “COVID-19 has become the death code designator du jour whenever anybody dies of a respiratory illness” and, as Williams puts it, “those who die with COVID-19 may be coded as dying from COVID-19 as it becomes the default cause of death.”
Don’t these writers know that those who die with this virus have tested positive for it? Why are they more concerned with the economy than they are with people’s lives?

I was waiting until I could post a civil comment regarding Wyatt Emmerich’s arrogant, cavalier column (“Keep coronavirus in some perspective,” April 8).
I really have issues with his dismissive attitude about who dies. Yes, some of us do keep up with lives lost from the flu every year. I strongly encourage my family, friends and co-workers to get a flu shot every year. I always end the discussion pointing out that shot could save your life.
This coronavirus is scary. Nobody has immunity to it. There is a nearly 100% chance you and yours will get it. Most will survive with nothing more than cold and/or flu-like symptoms. It is true the majority of COVID deaths are those who are elderly and have underlying conditions. These are people whose lives have worth. They are loved and needed by others.
Maybe Emmerich should have someone with a compassion chip read his columns or substitute one of his loved one’s names while proofreading.

People are still not taking this shelter in place seriously enough. Stay home, people. It’s just common sense.
You or a close family member may just be the next reported case or death. Utilize curbside and delivery services as much as you can. Leave your elderly family members and children at home.
School is not out for summer break. Children should not be running loose as if they are on spring break or summer vacation.
