Prison population
I cried and I cried when I read how U.S. District Judge Keith Starrett had agreed with the Mississippi Legislature’s passing of a bill to reform the state’s criminal justice system.
I am a single parent with three kids, and I must agree with the Legislature. There are too many people in prison, and most of them are not bad people at all. They just made bad choice. No one is perfect.
People have been locked up forever. All our kids are growing up without their mothers and fathers. That’s why so many crimes take place.
Let some of those people out of prison and give them a chance to better themselves.
We need to stop trying to kill and lock one another up, and start caring and loving more. The world may be safer to live in.

Education funding
Regarding the letter to the editor by Sherron Wright (“Haves want to keep have-nots down,” May 1):
Public education in Mississippi is well-funded.
The 2014 appropriation for the Department of Corrections is $383 million, while the 2014 appropriation for education is $3.23 billion. That is 3 billion with a B. All taxpayers in Mississippi contribute to this so all children can get a "free" education if they choose. Every person in Mississippi will benefit if we have a well-educated workforce.
And what is up with the “rich” doing as they want? There are a lot more of us than there are of them.
Abandoned track
I’m curious.
Why do we have a railroad track on U.S. 82 that is cut off about 10 feet east of the highway? If this is not used as part of the railroad track, why have it?
The road across the track, at best, is terrible. You have to slow down to keep from jarring your teeth and car on this strip of highway.
Why can’t our city or the railroad company pull up this track and pave the area? It would be a lot better on cars and passengers.
