Confederate flag
In The Greenwood Commonwealth on March 9, Emily Wagster Pettus of The Associated Press wrote an article about South Carolina lawmakers coming to Mississippi to give a speech on Mississippi changing its state flag.
She wrote how Democratic Rep. Justin Bamberg spoke at the state Capitol about how the flag is an unconstitutional vestige of slavery.
No slave ship ever brought slaves to America flying the Confederate flag or the Confederate battle flag. If he is accusing the Mississippi flag of being a vestige of slavery, it would be more accurate to claim that the United States flag fits that label more so than our state flag.

The Confederate battle flag is not about white heritage. If you want to preserve your heritage, that’s what museums are for.
In the African-American community, this flag reflects oppression and subjugation under the institutions of slavery and Jim Crow. That is a fact that’s beyond dispute.
We are the only state in the Union still flying this flag over the state Capitol. If that’s not bad enough, our governor has added insult to injury by designating the month of April Confederate Heritage Month. The only thing that African-Americans can conclude from this is Phil Bryant is either out of touch or he flat-out doesn’t care about a segment of his population.
A few of us know what the answer is. May God help us!

SUV’s slide in Yazoo
Regarding the article “Close call: SUV slides into river, is pulled out” (March 14):
Sue the city for every penny.
I lived in Greenwood and attempted to launch my boat there once.
As I was backing down, I pressed on my brakes and started sliding backward. Talk about a scary feeling when you press your brakes and your tires are dead still, but your truck is sliding backward toward the water.
Whoever designed it is a failure.
