Paula Deen
Regarding all who question the use of the N-word and Paula Deen:
I want to share what I once heard a young rapper say on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”
“My generation hasn’t had the same experience with that word (the N-word) as generations of people before us had. We weren’t so close to the pain. So in our way, we disarmed the word. We took the fire pin out of the grenade.”
It’s difficult, he said, to teach racism in the home when your kid loves a rapper. “It’s hard to say, ‘That guy is beneath you,’ when your kid idolizes that guy.”
I disagree. The word will never be disarmed. But that was his explanation.
I think that if people stopped saying the N-word, a word meaning the same thing would take its place.
It’s what’s in a person’s heart. Is a word just a word, or does the historical context of language matter?
It seems to me that the N-word will always sting, no matter the intention of the speaker, because we’re all familiar with its ugly roots. Name-calling is never good, I don’t care who does it.
I am African-American and over 60. I do think the sponsors have taken the Paula Deen situation too far. People change through conversation, not through censorship.
Guns and ammo
After visiting a number of gun stores, I discovered that ammunition is hard to find. A friend in Texas said you can’t find any there.
One store said that people are buying it up and can’t order enough. Another store said it can’t keep enough guns to sell.
A friend thinks the government is buying truckloads of ammunition and keeping law-abiding citizens from buying.
This tells me that people will be ready when the time comes to protect themselves.
Government would like to outlaw guns just as Adolf Hitler did in Germany, leaving citizens helpless.
Americans have a stacked deck in Washington. Our rights are slowly being taken away. Americans need to wake up and get ready for hard times.

Council raises
Regarding the article “Members sign up for raises” (July 1):
Now maybe Greenwood Councilman Johnny Jennings can pay his property taxes on time!
