Greenwood hospital
“Idiots all of you.”
That’s what a friend of mine said her mother would say when she and her siblings would do stupid kid things. That is all that comes to mind with the latest news of University of Mississippi Medical Center backing out from what would have been the best move to save Greenwood Leflore Hospital (“UMMC pulls affiliation offer,” Aug. 18):
The mayor, Greenwood City Council, Leflore County Board of Supervisors and, most importantly, the hospital board are simply ignoring the facts. We live in a shrinking and economically depressed area. Like it or not, just as Wal-Mart and Amazon types killed local stores, private, aggressive clinics and affiliations will and are running small independent hospitals out of business. As a result, without aggressive and creative leadership, our health-care system will certainly collapse.
Not too long ago, people from all over the Delta would come to Greenwood for health care. Now our hospital is even losing patients to Ruleville. Let that sink in for a little bit.

Visit to MVSU
Dr. Alfred Rankins Jr., the higher education commissioner, is visiting Mississippi Valley State University this Friday. He and the College Board need to hear from Valley and the community — the good and the bad.
Everyone is a stakeholder in the success of MVSU. Leadership from the president is required at all times. You represent the Valley. Stand behind your words “In Motion” or “Keep It Moving.”
MVSU, keep praying and keep preparing.

NFL protests
Regarding the editorial “Dak Prescott gets it right” (Aug. 17):
I thank God that the civil rights activists of the 1950s and 1960s didn’t take the view of Dak Prescott and this editorial on techniques of when and how to protest. If they had, where would we be today?
Protests are supposed to draw attention and to keep doing them until the problem is removed, not to make people feel good.
