State flag
Regarding the article “Letter signers want state’s flag changed” (Aug. 17):
I may not be a famous entertainer, football player, photographer or writer, but I am a proud Mississippian who’s proud of her Mississippi flag.
The people voted to keep the Mississippi flag in 2001. The people of Mississippi spoke, yet a few are determined to change it. It’s the decision of all Mississippians, not a few. I wonder how many of these famous people live in Mississippi.
If there is a question regarding the flag, it should be voted on by all Mississippians, not by a few.

The Civil War happened, Can’t change that. And there are more people who wish the flag to remain than there are who wish to change it.
You can find a large number of suck-ups on just about any issue. They’re not always the majority.

Regarding the article “Flag reappears, is removed again” (Aug. 14):
The whole “heritage” argument some keep dredging up about our flag always gives me one of those “shake my head” reactions.
Mississippi has been a state for almost 200 years and no doubt has many elements of heritage of which it can be justly proud. And yet somehow a battle flag symbolizing the brutal war of secession is the heritage we want to highlight?
Hopefully, we’re finally seeing the beginning of the end of that misguided notion.

Dislike the state flag? Don’t approve of the design voted on by Mississippians about 20 years ago? There’s a process for getting that on the ballot if you feel the Legislature should have jumped up immediately upon reading the misleading headlines produced on the East Coast about a part of our flag in response to racial manipulation.
Instead of forcing the will of three or four political winners on people who have already voted on the issue, go to the trouble of circulating a ballot initiative. The Secretary of State’s Office can show you how.
