Medicaid expansion
Regarding Tim Kalich’s op-ed column “Thank Gov. Bryant for hospital layoffs” (Sept. 11):
Let’s not blame “Obamacare’s drafters” for the failure of states to expand Medicaid. The expansion was to apply to every state until the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that it would be optional. That was all the excuse our governor needed to deny access to health care to many of this state’s poorest citizens.

This is in appreciation to Editor Tim Kalich for keeping to raise the issue of Medicaid expansion for the people in Mississippi who need it so desperately.
Gov. Phil Bryant’s argument about the government not keeping its word as far as the payment agreement just doesn’t hold up when it comes to hundreds of thousands of Mississippians being uninsured.
Journalists have been given a bad rap lately, and some of them deserve it. However, it’s good to have some in our hometown who are doing their job.
Thanks.

Leflore County High
It’s sad what Leflore County High School has going. These kids are stressing over this voting stuff. If parents don’t pull together like Greenwood High did, you will forever be in last place.
Y’all know that’s a family thing going on out there, right? Why are you still hiding, waiting on October to announce who the homecoming queen is?
They have dropped GPA scores to get a position. That’s so sad.
Y’all better get y’all a committee, Itta Bena, and move things around.
Hospital layoffs
On Aug. 19, the Commonwealth reported on the Greenwood City Council’s secret meeting (“executive session”) on Greenwood Leflore Hospital’s performance.
The “personnel” excuse won’t work. The layoffs were a financial/management issue, not a discussion of specific employees per se. Who was gonna get fired would rightfully be determined by the administration.
Any justification for the backroom confab referencing “competitive strategy” regarding area facilities doesn’t make any sense, either. How, exactly, is Ruleville gonna “steal” patients if our citizens are provided accurate, realistic information?
