State flag
Our editor tells us “what (Mississippi) doesn’t need is a drawn-out initiative-and-petition drive to put the issue (of the state flag) to a vote of the people” (“Don’t need flag petitions,” Oct. 6).
Why not? Because it takes effort. Why should those who are dissatisfied put in the work to get an issue on the ballot? They have already gotten their way by allowing individuals on various boards to simply say they are “insulted” or “offended” by a flag that the majority of the state has already voted for. Thus, they can circumvent the will of the people as expressed in the last vote.
Do we need to vote again? Probably, but why should those who are “unhappy”be treated any differently from individuals concerned about real issues like term limits, extension of eminent domain to allow seizure of private land to give to corporations, or voter ID? All those issues were or are hard to get the Legislature to tackle.

Mass shootings
Every time we have a mass shooting in this country, the very first thing the Republicans want to talk about is mental health. This is not to say that we shouldn’t, but that’s just one part of the equation.
The simple fact is there are too many guns in this country. That is a fact.
Mental health is a very serious problem, but a bigger problem is someone with mental illness with access to a stockpile of guns.
We love to talk about the Second Amendment, and rightly so. But know this: It comes with a terrible price.

Minimum wage
I’m hurt and sad about what’s going on in Mississippi. I just don’t understand why Mississippi’s minimum wage is still at $7.25 an hour. It’s like the state of Mississippi is holding people down. Then they wonder why so many people are packing up and leaving.
Greenwood has gone down so much in the last five to 10 years. It needs some real jobs and some real pay.
How do they think people can make it on $7.25 an hour. The cost of living is steadily going up but not the wages.
For Mississippi, especially Greenwood, it’s time for a change. Greenwood doesn’t have much to offer. Please, at least go up on the minimum wage.
