Cochran victory
Regarding the article “Cochran holds off tea party challenger” (June 25):
“Liberal Democrats cost Chris McDaniel the election”? What Democrats showed up at the polls?
What the tea party and McDaniel do not want to admit is that in this mid-term election, Mississippi Republican voters turned up in record numbers to say no to a candidate who had nothing to offer but a background based on racial hatred, talk about government shutdowns, doing nothing for Mississippi and, most importantly, having no ideas or clues on how to bring jobs and prosperity to this state. He has done nothing in the state Legislature but say no.
Instead of trying to blame this on “liberals,” he and the tea party should know by now that mid-term elections barely get a rise out of most voters, and that more conservatives came out to stop the influence of outside money on Mississippi elections. That’s the real story.

Regarding the editorial “How Cochran came back” (June 25):
Thad Cochran came back by being awakened by handlers and realizing he was in a real campaign. Cochran came back by promising those who have received benefits in the past (read “corporate/farm welfare”) that things would not change. Cochran came back by soliciting votes from Democrats who have never voted in or concerned themselves with Republican primaries, using scare techniques like phone calls and fliers threatening that the big, bad, scary Chris McDaniel would magically “cut off their welfare benefits.” Cochran came back by painting his challenger as a racist and by highlighting campaign stupidity, while asking for a pass on his voting record for more than a third of a century.

Poisonous snakes
After losing a beloved pet to a snake bite in a backdoor kennel, I would like to remind others of this danger so prevalent in the Delta.
Outdoors, please have children wear protective shoes (not sandals, flip-flops, etc.). And be on guard constantly with children and pets.
Young snakes especially are hard to see. Young snakes tend to release all of their poisonous venom when they bite, whereas mature snakes know to hold back some for the next strike. Both are deadly.
Please warn others.
