Neglected myrtles
Regarding the comment by CJB in “My Two Cents” (July 11):
Dear CJB, you weren’t the only person worried about the condition of the crepe myrtles on Park Avenue.
Altrusa Club of Greenwood donated the trees to the city of Greenwood about three years ago. We were in hopes that it would beautify Park Avenue.
Several times for the last couple of summers we have contacted the Public Works Department to complain that the trees needed to be watered.
Unfortunately, five of them died down to the ground. They are coming back out, but probably need to be replaced. Altrusa Club has arranged to have the trees pruned (they were much too top-heavy), Roundup (herbicide) sprayed around them, mulched and fertilized. A few of them also need to be staked. Martin Tribble with Farmers Market Nursery donated the fertilizer, God bless him.
There will probably be some people who complain that we have given them a “buzz” cut, but they were in bad condition. One of the trees in front of Walgreens had snapped in half with the weight of the limbs. Some people refer to pruning crepe myrtles as crepe murder, but I think it is better than death by neglect.
The trees will come back out and be beautiful, and this haircut will allow the trunks to strengthen. Hope they will be better taken care of in the future.

Regarding the article “District to seek tax hike” (July 15):
Previously it was stated that the Leflore County School District was extremely overstaffed. I would have thought that staff reductions would result in lower operating costs. Why the need for a tax increase?
