Teacher standards
Regarding the article “Senate OKs several school bills” (Feb. 13):
The proposed new ACT requirement for prospective teachers should be consigned to the trash heap of bad ideas.
A student can be fully admitted to our state’s universities and aspire to become a doctor, lawyer, scientist, engineer, even a politician, but they would be permanently barred from the teaching profession in many cases solely because of a test they took in high school. This, in turn, would make it even more difficult for underserved areas like the Delta to hire qualified and certified teachers.
Our legislators can brag right now that they are “raising standards,” but they will be singing a different tune if this ill-considered move becomes law.
