Corder’s column
Regarding Charles Corder’s op-ed column (“For my money, it’s movie ‘Moneyball,’” Oct. 14):
Mr. Corder likes a movie that is about men, sports, money and “the triumph of an idea.” He prefers this film to a movie about women, children, domestic workers and the “triumph of an idea.”
To Mr. Corder, the idea of using on-base-percentage to measure baseball players and get them for low salaries is so much more important than the idea that all people deserve to be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their social standing.
I know that “The Help” is not the finest movie ever made, but I am thrilled that so many people are seeing it and perhaps learning a new definition of courage.
What are they going to learn from “Moneyball”? How to make a buck?
Incidentally, I am a big baseball fan and watch games regularly.

Delta summit
Regarding the article “Delta summit: Speakers paint bleak picture of region” (Oct. 14):
You can’t improve little towns like those in the Delta when there aren’t jobs or money to entice people to come and live here.
Our neighborhood street is so full of potholes that you have to play dodge car just to get home.
I’ll be glad when my husband retires and we can live like we deserve to live.

School police
Regarding the article “3 candidates speak unopposed at ‘debate’” (Oct. 12):
Demetrice Bedell is police chief for the Greenwood School District? How pitiful it has become that our schools now have to have a constant police presence.

Gas prices
Thanks to Murphy USA for the 10-cent-per-gallon discount off of the $3.32 listed price. This reduces their markup to 60 cents over cost.
But they sell as low as $2.97 in other areas. Why not here?
Our area always is 25 to 30 cents higher than the lows in Mississippi.
