Merrick House
Regarding the article “Church to demolish Merrick House” (May 19):
Demolishing the Merrick House is terrible news for Grand Boulevard. What makes Grand Boulevard so special is the contiguous line of majestic oaks and stately homes that stretch from the Tallahatchie to the Yazoo. To interrupt that line of sight with another parking lot is bad for one of our community’s most valuable assets.
Each house on Grand Boulevard is listed with the Department of Archives and History on the National Historic Register. Most of the houses are considered contributing or pivotal. If the Merrick House is pivotal, that means it is architecturally important and unique. It would be a shame to destroy it. Once the structure is gone, it can never be replaced.
North Greenwood Baptist Church is a wonderful church with an active ministry, but in this instance, they are not being good stewards of the community where they live. They already have more parking than is used, and they have also demolished other homes and trees in their expansion a few years back.
I wish they would consider other options for this beautiful, historic house. I think the good will they could create in saving the home rather than destroying it would be beneficial to our town and their church.

It seems to me that churches in Greenwood have a lovely habit of tearing down Greenwood’s beautiful structures. I wonder if anyone remembers the other Baptist church tearing down a historic building in the ‘80s? I wonder if this new “green” space is another term for parking lot?

Bin Laden photos
Regarding the editorial “A freedom of information test” (May 16):
Sometimes, even though we may have the right to something or to do something, that does not make it right to do.
The Associated Press does not want the pictures of Osama bin Laden’s corpse because they believe the public has the right to see them. I believe AP wants the pictures released for the sake of high ratings.
Personally, I don’t want to see the pictures, and I believe most Americans don’t want or need to see them either.
