Regarding the article “Judge: Doctor ‘special danger’” (May 17):
I think Leflore County Judge Kevin Adams definitely made a right decision to deny Dr. Arnold Smith bond.
I think Dr. Smith is not only a danger to society but to himself as well. He has totally gone off the deep end.
This man had weapons around the hospital? This is scary! I thank God no one else was injured or killed.

Two men named Smith: I’m sure the irony was not lost to anyone who read the two front-page stories in Thursday’s newspaper about Dr. Arnold Smith and the late Harold Smith — two equally brilliant men.
The former, reviled as “a special danger,” will end his days in ignominy; the latter, lauded for a lifetime of service, ended his life with the thanks of a grateful community.

Jim Pinkston forgot to mention the two Smiths were also next-door neighbors. Really ironic!
Harold Smith was a really good man and gave me a lot of good advice about life over the years. Dr. Arnold Smith should have spent more time talking to his neighbor getting good advice and a lot less time with common criminals planning serious crimes.

Greenwood Utilities
A special word of thanks to the Greenwood Utilities crew:
This week I had to have a utility pole replaced in my backyard.
I was really impressed with the entire crew’s efficiency, professionalism and ability to work together. Within an hour or so, they had contacted the four or five agencies needed to get permission to dig and scheduled the necessary trucks, equipment and personnel.
Greenwood is fortunate to have its own independent power supply and reasonable rates, while providing many jobs and service to the city.
Special thanks to “Stump” (construction foreman Walter Shaw) and “Tat” (journeyman lineman Sean Wheat) and the rest of the crew.

Regarding the article “Bounds: Job search won’t hurt Valley’s Oliver” (May 14):
David Jordan stated that he stays out of the politics of hiring a president at Mississippi Valley State University.
What about the human fence that he and others tried to form to keep Dr. Oliver out of the campus. How quickly he forgets.
Let people do their jobs, then hold them accountable.
