Robert Strebeck
Robert Strebeck, to my understanding, was sent to the Leflore County School District to help it become a more productive school system.
Ever since he has been in the district, he has been downgrading the system. He hasn’t said one positive thing or shown the district or the community his plan to help improve the district. He keeps bringing up the same stuff with no solutions.
He took the cake when, according to The Associated Press, he called the children in the district illiterate. Parents, teachers and principals, that is a reflection on you. I think he needs to go. Who is paying him? We are.
I agree we have problems. Calling kids illiterate should not be acceptable.
Editor’s note: Strebeck has said that The Associated Press misconstrued his comment to the Senate Education Committee Tuesday. He said he testified that the district has high school students who have “a literacy problem.” The Associated Press has said it stands by its story.

Regarding the article “Strebeck: I didn’t say ‘illiterate’” (Jan. 30):
In order to recover from a problem, one must admit there is a problem. There is a literacy problem in Leflore County. The problem is no different from a number of other communities.
The communities that made improvements recognized the problem and worked with their schools. They also held their schools accountable for educating their children.
Every student in a Star school is not high-performing. The status is a snap-shot of the school.
Mr. Strebeck made a general statement based upon student data. It does not represent every child in the district. Even if your child is on or above grade level, the issue impacts your child’s education.
Work with the district to make improvements. Ask what you can do to help.

Why did Robert Strebeck feel the need to discuss matters concerning the Leflore County schools with the Greenwood Rotary Club as opposed to discussing his concerns with the parents first? I doubt many of the Rotarians have children in the public school system.
As Strebeck is required to submit his findings to the state Board of Education, one would also think he would be obligated to reveal his findings to the parents and guardians of the students in the school system as opposed to them getting it secondhand from a news source.
