Katrina cottages
Regarding the Katrina cottages:
If the city cannot legally donate the cottages, and I thought I saw an earlier article that said it can only “sell” them, why doesn’t the city “sell” them to whichever foundation it chooses for $1 each. It seems like this would eliminate a lot of hassle and waiting for the state Legislature.
Editor’s note: According to Greenwood Mayor Carolyn McAdams, when the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency donated the Katrina cottages to the city, the agreement stipulated that if the city were to sell the cottages, it would have to do so according to the state surplus law and put them up for auction to the highest bidder. Any proceeds of such a sale would be returned to MEMA.
Ole Miss murder
Regarding the article on page 9 of Friday’s Commonwealth (“3 men charged in Ole Miss graduate student killing”):
First of all, it’s extremely sad to learn that an Ole Miss student was recently found killed, allegedly by other Ole Miss students. But I can’t help but wonder, Where’s the front-page, large-print, bold headline about it?
A Mississippi Valley State University student can be accused of taking an Xbox from a dorm room, and it would trump all other news stories in Greenwood.
This is a perfect example of the level of bias and unfairness in this news source.
Mary Wooten
Regarding the article “Pianist, teacher recalled as ‘good friend’” (Dec. 19):
This is a beautiful story and well-told by Tim Kalich.
Peter Houck
Arnold Smith
Regarding the article “Smith found unfit for trial” (Dec. 18):
Is anyone surprised by this?
