Dan Jones
Admittedly, John Grish-am writes an entertaining, easy beach-read. I have had nothing but respect for Archie Manning’s humility, loyalty and football skills. I never used Jim Barksdale’s Netscape. Are they still in business?
But none are in any way qualified to get involved with backroom politics, administration of higher education or personnel evaluations. I’m sorely disappointed that they assert a level of expertise sufficient to undermine the legally established, governing IHL Board of Trustees. I’m pretty much disgusted that any private donor would consider resorting to blackmail to maintain control of a public entity.
Ole Miss has survived the political hacks in Jackson and the figureheads in Oxford for a long time. If Chancellor Dan Jones wants a free ride forever — “can’t accomplish” anything in two years — he apparently didn’t want or need the job to begin with. Most of us are lucky to get a two-week notice, much less two years.

Public assistance
I totally agree with Maggie Outlaw’s stance that any public assistance to parents should come with the provision that a birth-control implant be required (“Tie public assistance to birth control,” April 1).
Persons refusing to agree to the program should not receive any public assistance. They can have as many children as they want. They will just have to go to work and provide for them.
I pity the unfortunate welfare children who are denied a decent upbringing because of irresponsible parents. Our whole society is undermined by able-bodied, non-working freeloaders.

‘American Sniper’
Regarding Charles Corder’s op-ed column “War film is also anti-war” (April 3):
That was an awesome column he wrote on “American Sniper”!
We always need to remember what “our” soldiers go through in battle and what they must relive at home upon their return. Chris Kyle was a true American hero.
