Confederate statue
Regarding the article “Museum explains not accepting statue” (July 10):
The Museum of the Mississippi Delta’s response turning down the Confederate monument is ridiculous. History is divisive; one side was going to be wrong.
It is the responsibility of the museum to preserve the history of an area. Unfortunately, this is the history of our area. This is not a statue glorifying the president of the Confederacy, or a general. It is a memorial to the ones who lost their lives. Many of the Confederate soldiers owned no slaves. Moving that statue is like desecrating a headstone in a cemetery.
The Vietnam War was offensive to a lot of Americans, but the memorials are still there to those who died.
I was thumbing through a Bible and was struck by the same thing going on here that has been happening for thousands of years: one person destroying another’s history. If not for the kings of the Holy Land trying to wipe out the existence of the previous ruler and religion, we may actually know what Jesus looked like.
Wiping out offensive history is not going to make it go away. Maybe in hundreds of years, this will not matter to future generations, but maybe it will, and like a lot of biblical history, it will be lost forever.

Street violence
Regarding the article “Leaders discuss curbing violence” (July 9):
I am so grateful that there is some form of reconciliation and facilitation of bringing our communities together. We are all God’s children, regardless of race, sex, denomination, status, or place of residence.
As a single mother of two sons, I fear for them every day. I fear for my brothers, cousins and all of my male relatives. I also fear for my young male students. I want them to have a chance to live and grow up as children should.
Long gone are the days of seeing children racing on foot, jumping rope or even playing hide-and-seek. Our children are not able to even stand outside their homes anymore.

Donald Trump
The murder of George Floyd would not have galvanized America if Donald Trump had not been in the Oval Office. Trump by his words and actions made it impossible for the majority of Americans to ignore the racism that exists. Trump shows that racism is so prevalent in America.
