Teen pregnancy
Regarding the article “Down 17% by ‘17” (Oct. 18):
If Gov. Phil Bryant wants to talk about 2017, he should consider this was the original expiration year for Mississippi State Board of Health proposed appointee Carl Reddix, MD.
A native Mississippian and well-trained obstetrician-gynecologist, Dr. Reddix would have been well-qualified to offer his expertise in this area of high teen pregnancy in our state. But in the final hour, Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves did not refer Reddix’s appointment to the appropriate legislative body for confirmation. Governor Bryant then replaced Reddix with a radiologist who was quickly confirmed.
The explanation for not confirming Reddix was his peripheral association with Mississippi’s abortion clinic. He agreed to care for patients from the clinic who required hospitalization for any reason.
So I strongly agree that “17% by 17” is politics, not substance.

David Jordan
I first want to congratulate Connie Johnson on being appointed to the Greenwood School Board.
City Councilman David Jordan made his vote on the basis that Mrs. Johnson is white. He clearly stated this with his own words. This is nothing more than ignorance from a retired educator.
I wonder if he noticed the back page of the Commonwealth Friday. Mrs. Johnson was photographed as she was volunteering for the Clothes for Kids fundraiser. Mrs. Johnson has devoted many hours to the Greenwood Mentoring Group. Mr. Jordan, how come you weren’t at this fundraiser volunteering your time?
I can answer this. Mr. Jordan does not have time because he is too busy stirring racial tension rather than working for the good of all citizens in Leflore County.

Greenwood Utilities
Regarding the comment in “My Two Cents” Oct. 18 that was critical of the customer service at Greenwood Utilities:
When I was living in Greenwood, I always encountered very polite people that worked behind the counter at Greenwood Utilities. If I had a problem about a bill or needed more time paying my bill, they would always try to help me solve my problem.
I guess it’s best to be nice yourself and then maybe you’ll get it back in return.
