Education funding
Regarding Billy Joe Ferguson’s op-ed column (“Governor, you’re wrong,” Jan. 8):
Billy Joe, you are right, absolutely right. I’d only offer two comments.
First, your appeal to Gov. Phil Bryant’s potential heroism is irrelevant and off the table. As with all politicians, votes and influence take priority over principle, results or even the law. He got elected, ergo the “right people” have made him a hero in his own mind and to a minority of rational citizens. The petty problems that you, the school district, your students and parents share will have no impact on his career — a future Senate race, as a lobbyist or a seat on boards of directors.
Second, of course the state and Bryant are legally and morally obligated to fund Carroll County schools. But the specifics of how you spend the dollars are like showing your hole cards before the flop at the final table of the World Series of Poker or any other game. It’s none of Phil’s business how you spend the money. You’re the superintendent and an educator. Bryant, the Mississippi Department of Education and the Legislature are merely politicians and deadbeats.

Texting while driving
Regarding the editorial “Ban texting while driving” (Jan. 11):
Let a texting individual lame or kill one of their family members and let’s see how fast they change their minds.
