Independence Day
Regarding the editorial “Celebrate, remember on Independence Day” (July 3):
“Even the world’s best army, fighting far from home, couldn’t defeat a determined foe on its home turf. Great Britain wouldn’t be the last nation to learn that painful lesson.”
Unfortunately, “the most powerful nation on earth” in 2012 still hasn’t learned this “painful lesson.”
Since the Roman Empire, historically and empirically, home-field advantage has proven to be insurmountable. That’s been shown most recently in Korea, Vietnam, Somalia, Iraq and twice in Afghanistan. It took the Russians 11 years to figure out that they couldn’t win in Afghanistan. Apparently it’s going to take the U.S. just as long.
