Police chief’s firing
As a recent graduate of Mississippi Valley State University, it is very disheartening to read Police Chief Alex Granderson was fired (“Police chief, others fired at MVSU,” Sept. 12).
I can personally say that he has always looked out for the students and faculty. I had a problem with a person on campus harassing me as I entered the building I had classes in. As soon as I reported it, the guy never harassed me again. Granderson made sure we all felt safe and wanted to make sure we knew we could come to him for anything.
Also, if the man has never had a write-up or a problem, then what is Jacqueline Gibson’s reason for firing him? What justification does she have to fire him, Lloyd Dixon and Jacqueline Williams? I will be waiting for the answers. #ReINSTATEGRANDERSON.

At times, tough choices have to be made in order to try and reach a positive result. To blame one person and air old grievances are not the solution.
Jacqueline Gibson has been given additional responsibilities with no increase in salary. Check with IHL.
But trust me, if the president of the university does not sign off on firings, they don’t happen.
Higher Education Commissioner Alfred Rankins Jr. along with the IHL board in a few years will have the opportunity to truly do what’s right for MVSU. That’s what some of us alums envision for a brighter future.
MVSU 4-ALWAYS
Clemon Baker
Regarding the article “MVSU educator loved, admired by his students” (Sept. 11):
I can remember Dr. Clemon Baker being a man of dignity, high morals and academic standards.
He stayed on me so I would be able to transition from being a “boy,” which he called me, to a man, fellow educator and Jackson State alumnus. I will always remember the many poems, the conjugation of verbs and other life lessons that he bestowed upon me.
Thanks for all that you did for all of your students and especially what you did for mel
