Vitamin D
Regarding Dr. John Hey’s letter to the editor (“Vitamin D might ward off COVID-19,” May 12):
Dr. Leslie Ray Matthews, former Indianola resident who’s now the head of trauma surgery at Grady Hospital in Atlanta, has researched and presented internationally for the past 15 years on the need for vitamin D3 to improve the immune system and fight viruses. I’m continually baffled at how the medical professionals are ignoring his findings and just now beginning to talk about what he’s said for years about the benefits of vitamin D3. Fortunately, there are many of us who’ve been following his advice for years and taking vitamin D3.
I wonder where his findings would have been had he not been a black man from the poor Mississippi Delta? Google him. Read the many articles where he’s been appreciated and followed all over the world.

Coronavirus
Regarding the op-ed column by Hu Meena (“Embrace the change,” May 13):
This guest column is one of the most enlightening and optimistic ones concerning our reaction to COVID-19 that I have seen in this newspaper.
Meena describes a scene from “The Chosen,” based on Jesus’ time on earth, in which our Lord tells Peter, “Get used to different.” Meena applies Jesus’ words to Peter in this series to the way we should be reacting to the changes wrought by this new virus. Instead of whining and longing for the way things were a few months ago, Meena says, “We need to embrace different and move forward.”
As the prophet Isaiah says, God is “doing a new thing” and is asking us, “Don’t you recognize it?” (Isaiah 43:19). When Jesus was on earth, He moved people out of their comfort zones. Isn’t He doing the same thing to us now? It’s up to us to seize this opportunity for change and growth.
