Tea party
Regarding the comment in “My Two Cents” (June 5) in support of the tea party:
I am always amazed that when folks talk about government spending, they go right to food stamps and welfare. Little do they realize that the farm bill that subsidizes one farmer costs way more than one family on welfare. The poor are not the issue.
I agree that everyone needs a job and paying for folks to have and raise children out of wedlock is not good.
I was talking to a person who is well-educated and versed in the social ramifications of the Mississippi Delta. My question was, “What went wrong? What happened to the family and its values?” The answer: “Welfare came into being.” It was a good idea that helped some but was and is taken advantage of by many.
But they are a small drop in the bucket next to the money given out to “Big Money.” Look at the whole picture, not just one little speck on the canvas.

Child abuse
On Thursday, as I walked in a store in Greenville, I heard loud, uncivil, vexatious sounds. As I went on in, I encountered a grandparent and a “mother” of three young children. The children were very pretty. They were trying on outfits.
The mother and grandparent were around 45 and 75 years of age, respectively. They constantly yelled at the children, berated them and made demeaning remarks to them. The children were doing nothing wrong, just being children.
I turned around at one point, and the grandmother was lifting her hand to slap the youngest girl, for no reason. When she saw me looking, she put her hand down and said to the child, who was just standing there, “Don’t make me slap you!” I literally got sick to my stomach, turned and left the store.
What is wrong with people? We are supposed to be a civilized society. Why have children? Seems all they are worth is a $300 or $400 check. Where are Christianity and love?
These women were big, a hundred times larger than these precious children. They demanded fear, not respect.
