Alcohol distribution
Regarding the editorial “Wine sales at grocery stores?” (Jan. 14):
In our supposedly rock-ribbed conservative state, the government maintains a complete monopoly on the wholesale supply, pricing and distribution of alcoholic beverages. So why not just label that for what it really is — socialism?

Farmland taxes
Regarding the article “High taxes, low prices worry farmers” (Jan. 14):
I’ve spent 40 years looking at Delta farmers.
They drive brand-new trucks, their “soccer mom” wives don’t work, and they, too, drive new SUVs. They usually have two kids attending private school ($1000/month), and they usually buy their kids new cars/trucks when they turn 16.
Tell me again how much worry they have.

Monopoly control
I was raised in Itta Bena and am living in Greenwood. My children are going to Threadgill Elementary School.
Here is the problem. There is a family here that wants itself or its children, cousins and friends to run Greenwood. No one else is accepted, right or wrong.
The good part about it is our senators go along with it.

Harry Smith
Regarding the article “Former longtime mayor dies” (Jan. 12):
Harry Smith was a very sweet and kind person. He will be missed.
