Day-care workers
In response to the comment in “My Two Cents” Wednesday about day cares closing early:
Let’s set the record straight. First of all, day-care workers are people, too, with lives and families of their own. Most are paid minimum wage with no benefits. Most work five days a week and work anywhere from nine to 12 hours per day.
They take care of your children, they feed them breakfast and lunch, they play with them, teach them, nurture them and love them as well as clean their dirty bottoms and clean up their vomit. The day-care worker is your children's "parent" for most of their waking hours.
A lot of parents will not keep their children home when the children are sick or until they are well. They bring them to school with diarrhea from "antibiotics," vomiting from "something they ate" and fever from "teething,” knowing good and well the child is sick. The day-care workers get sick from your child or what your child has passed on to another child. The day-care workers have to either work sick, take off to recuperate without pay or go to the doctor to get well with money they don’t have because of menial pay and a lack of benefits (health insurance).
Day-care workers are not meteorologists. They have to rely on the media for inclement-weather and dangerous-driving-condition information as well as school closings.
The rule of thumb is if road and weather conditions are too dangerous for school kids, they are too dangerous for day-care children. The roads are dangerous for all concerned.

Regarding the article “Greene’s wife hired as coach” (Feb. 22):
The way people in this town are or were acting, why not? We had people walk out on our kids and folks wanting to see the schools go down. They say they love the kids, but they walked away.
Dr. Montrell Greene and the Greenwood School Board are doing right. Put people there who will not stab him in the back.
I’m about to think this is a sick town. Go, Greene and board. Go, Bulldogs. Love getting things done.
