Greenwood Acres
Regarding the article, “Residents oppose seniors complex” (April 6):
Just buy 24 more trailers and park them next door. That’s all that they are used to anyway.
I wouldn’t want to stay next to the trailer park either. What are they complaining about?

Now I just want to see how people are going to to blame this on the black, well-respected leaders in this community who’ve been trying to show everyone that these people exist in this city (Exhibit A). Now do you people still think a lynching is impossible in this city? What a shame.

They don’t want to put their name out there because of the threats that would happen if they do! I don’t blame them at all. Cowards, no. Smart, yes.

It’s a mobile home park, which means your house is on wheels. Move your house if you don’t like your neighbors.

We all know the results of subsidized rental properties, regardless of what is promised in the beginning. The developer will probably sell out somewhere along the way, and there is no recourse in the way the complex is handled. Where is the improvement to the existing residents’ quality of life. I think there will be none.
Much has been written and said about stereotyping a whole group of people, but in all stereotypes there is some truth, even if it is not admitted to.
Whites are labeled racist for objections for what will more than likely be apartments for black residents, but I think what is called racism a lot of the time is actually self-preservation.

Phone scam
Several days ago, my husband received a telephone call from a young man claiming to be his grandson in jail in Mexico and in grave danger, asking that his grandfather wire a large sum of money to him immediately to get him out. He also asked that neither his parents nor anyone else be told of this because he didn’t want it on his record.
You can imagine how distressing this was, but fortunately before going to the bank to get the money, my husband tried to call the grandson and found that he was right here in Mississippi and in no danger at all.
He then called Greenwood Police Chief Henry Purnell to report the call. In no time, there was an officer in our home who could not have been more professional as he allayed all our fears. He was also there when a second call came from the perpetrator.
My husband handed the phone to the officer, and after getting all the information he could from the caller, he identified himself as Lt. Ray Moore with the Greenwood Police Department. As you might expect, we received no more calls.
We deeply appreciate the courteous and efficient manner in which the Police Department handled this case.
Once again, I have been reminded of how fortunate we are to live in Greenwood.
