Editor, Commonwealth:
In regard to the letter by Graham Caparelli (“Lent is the season to go meat-free,” Feb. 20), I would like to say that he is correct in saying that God gave Adam the herbs and plants to eat in Genesis 1:29.
However, if we continue to read through Genesis, in Chapter 9, Verse 3, God tells Noah when he came off the ark that all animals that moved on the earth were for food. Also, when God met Abraham on the way to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah, he was fed bread and beef.
As far as animals being the largest source of greenhouse gases, I don’t take much stock in anything that the United Nations puts forth. Animals are not at fault for all the smog in our large cities.
Although there have been documented cases of animal abuse, most of us who are in the animal business take great care to tend to our animals needs. We provide food, water, shelter, care when they are sick and hurting, and we treat them as gently as we can. They are our livelihood.
You can find cases of abuse in any business if you search enough. I, for one, am tired of someone with an agenda trying to tell me how to live my life. We get enough of that from our government.
I applaud him for his choices. Just let me make my own choices.
