Editor, Commonwealth:
Toys have really changed over these fast-moving years. Let’s rewind to 1955, when toys for children seemed so simple, as were the times.
As a child, I sat on Santa’s lap. I handed him my Christmas list, and he let out a laugh so loud and yelled, “Merry Christmas.” I was a little scared, but I didn’t cry. I looked into his blue eyes and pulled his beard of white.
My Christmas list consisted of a Mr. Potato Head, a horsehead stick, a Duncan yo-yo, a balsa wood airplane, Roy Rogers cap pistols, boots and hat, a water pistol, a blue kite, a View-Master, a game of pickup sticks and a butterfly net.
As the Bob Dylan song goes, “The times are a’ changing.”
The old Christmas memories I cherish from my childhood were before the computer age of cellphones, flat-screen TVs, electric cars, YouTube, Twitter, Google and microwave ovens. When a buck was silver and a joint a bad place to be. When record players were in high demand along with eight-track tape players.
Goodbye, Santa. I’m much older now. Hope you remember me. Merry Christmas. Happy New Year. Happy holidays for all.
