Editor, Commonwealth:
Regarding the article “Judge: City can’t pay McAdams’ legal fees” (May 28):
Can anyone point me to an instance in Greenwood or Leflore County where taxpayers were asked to pay for lawyers to defend an election contest?
• Jan Montgomery / Trey Evans 1991
• Robert Moore / Mike Turner 1991
• Orlando Fratesi / Carl Palmer 1993
• Larry Thames / Alfred King 2001
• David Jordan / George Ellis 2005
• Sheriel Perkins / Harry Smith 2005
• Anjuan Brown / Preston Ratliff 2011
• Dorothy Glenn / Andrew Powell 2013
• Takiyah Perkins / Carol White-Richard 2014
Every single one of these candidates, both winners and losers, paid for their own lawyers, and no taxpayer money was used to hire lawyers to get involved in their contests.
I cannot recall a single instance in Greenwood or Leflore County in the last 30 years where any of the lawyers were paid for with taxpayer money. So why should we start now?
