Roaming free in the open savanna — as Nabisco’s re-designed Animal Crackers box now depicts the wild animals — the zebra soon becomes lunch for the lion, and the giraffe ends up as the lion’s supper another day.
Gone from the box are the cage bars and the Barnum circus wagon. Also missing is the fetching affection between parents of each species and their offspring: the lion sporting with his whelp, the mother polar bear with her cub, the mother elephant with her calf, and the mother gorilla with her infant. Those realistic, true-to-nature pictures have been replaced with an unrealistic, contrary-to-nature picture of lone specimens standing near each other peacefully.
That state of bliss did exist when God first made the world. And it will be restored again when paradise is re-established under Jesus’ reign as king (His second advent). But it’s been lost ever since Adam and Eve sinned against the Creator.
The bliss I speak of is when the wolf shall lie down with the lamb, of course, not barren wolves having no pups to lie down with. I share the chagrin Lee Ann Flemming expressed on Sept. 1–2, ‘“Just when you think you have heard it all.’”
