Editor, Commonwealth:
This newspaper’s editorial “McDaniel finding less traction” (July 7-8) said that the Chris McDaniel campaign seemed to “lack the energy” that it had four years ago.
I say it has more grassroots support than ever before. Almost 185,000 Republican voters voted for Chris McDaniel in 2014. Our goal is to increase this by 10 times.
Mississippi deserves conservative representation. Mississippi has not had conservative representation in Congress for many decades. All had an “R” by their name, but none of their voting records are or were conservative. Only Rep. Bennie Thompson has a little bit worse voting record, according to all the conservative group ratings. Go to Heritage Foundation, Senate Conservatives Fund or Club for Growth to verify this.
State Sen. McDaniel is a life- long conservative Republican. He has a state Senate record of authoring many, many good conservative bills that got passed into law and greatly benefited citizens of this state.
This editorial also said that since Republicans are in charge now, they cannot blame Democrats for much of anything. But the RINOs in both houses have not been a lot of help. Do Mississippi voters support that big omnibus $1.3 trillion spending bill passed by Republicans this March? President Donald Trump even threatened to veto it. Filled with pork! It funded Planned Parenthood, had almost nothing on border security and included numerous pet projects of these RINOs. What would conservatives have gotten differently if we had all Democrats? Nothing!
Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith just recently voted against Sen. Rand Paul’s balanced budget plan. Called “The Penny Plan,” it would deduct one penny from every dollar the federal government spends until the budget is balanced. Over 10 years this plan would cut $8.7 trillion from our federal debt. It’s a very straight-forward, simple plan to balance the federal budget. So why elect another RINO?
The voters of Mississippi want to see a debate. Guess what? Sen. Hyde-Smith refuses to debate state Sen. McDaniel. He has asked her many times. She is a fairly young woman and has held a government job for more than 20 years? Why would she refuse to debate? Sen. Thad Cochran’s campaign handlers would not let him debate.
Prior to being in the state Senate as a Democrat for three terms, Sen. Hyde-Smith was a D.C. lobbyist during the Clinton administration. Then putting an “R” by her name (cannot win a Mississippi statewide election as a Democrat), she was elected as state agriculture commissioner. So how does this help President Trump drain the swamp?
Breitbart News reported early on that President Trump has refused to endorse Sen. Hyde-Smith, saying her being a longtime Democrat could be problematic for his agenda. Sen. Smith has also said she “does not remember” whom she voted for in the Democratic presidential primary in 2008. Rickey Cole, previous leader of the Mississippi Democratic Party, says she voted for Hillary Clinton.
At a time when the country is seeing that the Democrats are going absolutely crazy, wanting to impeach our president, wanting to do away with our security at the borders, seeming to want more illegals to come into our country, why would a state as conservative as Mississippi, having been voted the most conservative state for many years now, want to vote for a Democrat who just turned into a RINO a few years ago?
