Editor, Commonwealth:
Congratulations to all the participants of the Viking Half Marathon and 5K.
I was not a participant. On a cold morning like Saturday, running a half marathon never enters my mind. The only thing I’m inclined to run is a hot bath.
“Run” and “fun” rhyme. That, in my experience, is the only thing those words have in common. I would rather walk blindfolded and barefoot over a floor full of Lego pieces, in a room occupied by unrestrained baby alligators.
However, these intrepid runners reminded me of some important lessons:
Each person is only granted one heart, and it has to last long enough to take that individual to his last breath. It’s important to exercise to keep it pumping at its best. If a heart starts having problems because of neglect, it is not possible to drive to the local Wal- Mart and purchase a new one. The only option is to take care of the heart a person is given.
The half marathon also illustrated the strong sense of community and solidarity in Greenwood. It took a great deal of initiative to wake up early and bend into a pretzel to warm up for a 5K run. Additionally, it was all done in a spirit of fun and camaraderie, which is so endearing in a small Southern city such as Greenwood. I’m proud to be a part of this refreshingly social community.
I applaud all the participants. Running is not my favorite form of exercise. I prefer walking. However, if I were promised an Honest Abe’s maple doughnut at the end of the half marathon, even I might be persuaded to strap on some running shoes.
