Editor, Commonwealth:
It has been said that the U.S.A. is the land of freedom and opportunity. I really need someone to explain that to me.
I have nothing against immigrants, and I wish them well. My issue is the lie we as Americans are being told. We have honest, law-abiding citizens who will work hard for their employers, yet they are being turned away in favor of immigrants. Many are not even legal. They have no formal education, cannot speak or understand the English language, yet they are given better jobs and opportunities than the underprivileged. They are provided free housing, higher wages and access to social services. To top it off, they send a percentage of their American-made dollars back to their native country.
And you wonder why America is in a rut?
If American citizens apply for the same job and have no high school diploma or GED, they aren’t even given a chance to prove they can do the work.
I realize the importance of an education, yet why are our citizens being discriminated against? It has gotten so bad that when shopping, one has to search for the English language on a product in the stores. It is not required for immigrants to speak English, but it is becoming necessary for us to learn their language.
Our citizens need decent wages to provide for their families also. Your excuse is American citizens will not do common labor. What a crock!
For the employers who are crying about the minimum wage being raised, please tell me how many of you will be able to support your families on such meager earnings. If you take some of those millions that are given to CEOs and give the actual workers decent wages, life would be less stressful for many. But I guess that’s too much like right.
It’s time to give our citizens the same opportunities that are given to immigrants. At least our citizens’ dollars will remain in the U.S.A. and help boost the economy.
