Editor, Commonwealth:
You and, more importantly, your readers missed a historic milestone in baseball.
It was 75 years ago last Sunday, July 17, 1941, that New York Yankees star Joe DiMaggio’s 56-game hitting streak came to an end.
It was against the Cleveland Indians, and pitchers Al Smith and Jim Bagby Jr. and the slick fielding of third basemen Ken Keltner stopped Joltin’ Joe. He went on to win the MVP award in the American League that year ahead of Boston’s Ted Williams, the last man to bat over .400 with an average of .406.
Those two records might never be broken.
DiMaggio also hit in 61 straight games in 1933 in the Pacific Coast League while a member of the San Francisco Seals.
