Editor, Commonwealth:
I enjoyed the article on the Mississippi Valley State University student who was recognized by the Mississippi Legislature Tuesday at the 31st HEADWAE awards (“MVSU professor, student earn honors,” Feb. 20).
What the article did not mention is that two of the 34 students honored at the ceremony were from Greenwood and graduates of Greenwood schools. Ashley Dominique Griffin is a Pillow Academy graduate and the Delta State recipient, and William Deshun Robinson is a Greenwood High graduate and the Rust College honoree.
Every year the faculty at each of the state’s 34 colleges, community colleges and universities is asked to choose one outstanding and academically talented student to represent their institution as the HEADWAE honoree, and it reflects well on Greenwood that two of this year’s 34 top students are from our town.

Editor’s note: Mr. Lawes is too modest to toot his own horn, but it should be noted that he was selected as the HEADWAE faculty honoree from Mississippi Delta Community College. Unfortunately, the newspaper did not learn, until after the event, of his recognition or that of the two Greenwood students he mentions.
