Editor, Commonwealth:
In these times, good deeds seem like a thing of the past, and random acts of kindness are often overshadowed by negativity.
My wife and I were leaving Hurricane Irma from Florida, heading west across the great state of Mississippi, when we experienced a rear tire blowout on our Ford pickup truck between Winona and Greenwood on U.S. 82 Sunday, Sept. 10. What happened next shocked us. People actually stopped!
A young lady stopped almost immediately offering help on her cellphone. She was followed by a young man who jacked up the truck and two others who helped put the spare on like a pro NASCAR pit crew. After the spare was on, cars were still stopping, asking to help.
Looking back, I realize we were once again in the “real” South among Southern folks. I fondly remember my time stationed at Naval Air Station Meridian and the multiple times we have been back to the state.
This experience has had a profound effect on us, especially strengthening our faith in humanity at a time it is well needed in our country.
To all the good Samaritans who helped or even stopped, we thank you so much. God bless you.
