Editor, Commonwealth:
At the end of June, I needed emergency admission to Greenwood Leflore Hospital with severe thrombosis in both lungs, coupled with a mild heart attack.
Through the years, I had not been much of a fan of our local hospital. Real problems during GLH stays in the ’80s and ’90s left me skeptical. But happily, my husband and I can testify this admission absolutely saved my life.
The conditions necessitated a couple of days in intensive care and the remainder of the week in a monitored bed. From pickup by great Med-Stat ambulance guys, emergency room treatment, testing and admission, things moved quickly and efficiently. Does everything seem perfect at GLH? Well, no. Some of the equipment appears shopworn, the physical plant looks “starved” for funds, and it’s obvious this is a small hospital in a poor area. But the wonderful staff more than compensates for minor things.
Nearly every physician, nurse, technician or caregiver who assisted strictly, but kindly, observed established patient protocols. Orders were carried out efficiently. Decisions were completely discussed with me and my family. From start to finish the stay was an eye-opener in what an educated and properly trained staff can do to enhance patient comfort and continuing health.
I recently read in the Commonwealth that GLH is focusing on patient care and satisfaction. This was definitely the case for my stay. I'd like to express appreciation to the staff who restored my confidence in our local hospital.
