Editor, Commonwealth:
This is in reference to the op-ed column by Leonard Pitts Jr. titled “A child of domestic violence” (Feb. 15).
To say the least, I was completely disgusted with Mr. Pitts describing the president of the United States as a “lumpy sack of moldy oranges.”
We are fortunate to live in a country where we have freedom of speech along with other freedoms that our men and women have died for over the years and are still putting their lives on the line in order for us to enjoy these freedoms. For a national columnist to refer to the president as a “lumpy sack of moldy oranges” is completely unacceptable to me and I would think would be unacceptable for the press to print such an article.
Mr. Pitts was a victim of domestic violence, and now thinks as a journalist he can put the blame on our president. In my opinion, this is nothing but an attempt to further divide the country using his freedom of speech to belittle our president.
We should be thankful we have the freedom to disagree even with the president of the United States, but there is a right way and a wrong way to disagree. Calling people names is not the right way, and putting this in print does nothing to make us a better informed community.
